Mes Gestes Climat
Project for ADEME
About the MGC App
Mes Gestes Climat (MGC) is an application that encourages users to reduce their carbon impact.
The project’s objective is to add more impact to datagir, a website by ADEME. To accomplish this, MGC tries to provide a follow-up after the Nos Gestes Climat online test, which calculates the users carbon impact. The MGC app encourages through gamification the user to follow the recommendations given by the online test.
Team: Camille Saphore et Luc Hayman
Hypothesis
"Accompanying the user to follow the recommendations of the NGC test wil decrease the users carbon emissions."
Hypothesis development
First we tested to see if our hypothesis was true
To do this, we sent a questionnaire completed by at least 21 people aware of sustainable development. Our questions were aimed at determining the level of involvement in reducing the users current carbon impact, and the level of involvement desired. 88.9% of respondents indicated that they do not consider their current actions enough. In a second step, we determined the behavior of our respondents with sports monitoring applications. Of the 11 respondents (50%) who use a sports tracking app, 45% of respondents felt that the app had an impact on their behavior.
Then we determined how to help the user reduce their carbon impact
Motivation
The Nos Gestes Climat questionnaire already gives very good recommendations to follow to reduce your carbon impact. Where the user experience can be improved is to increase the users motivation. To improve motivation, we explored 3 areas : Gamification The tone https://infos.ademe.fr/lettre-recherche-janvier-2021/comment-favoriser-les-demarches-de-transition/ Collective Intelligence
The user journey after the Nos Gestes Climat simulator
To understand the journey of a user after the Nos Gestes Climat test, we asked 10 users to do the carbon footprint simulator. Then, a week later, they answered our questions : https://bcmzskjauhu.typeform.com/report/E6Q7tQng/ZAWBw0ojjfDGdcly
Finally, we prioritized the most important functionalities
• Quests :
A quest is an achievement. My Climate Gestures will have a list of quests that the user can complete (e.g. find the closest recycling center to me, display the calendar of seasonal fruits & vegetables at my place, join an MGC group)
• Streaks / Objective :
A user can choose a streak (e.g. don't eat meat, don't use the car, use the bike) and must say each month if he succeeded in the streak. The user's goal is to continue a streak for as long as possible. The streak unit for individual challenges is the flame (one month of challenge held will earn the user a flame)
• Des groupes Mes Gestes Climat
MGC users can band together to do collective quests and streaks together. The unit for group streaks and quests are drops.
User testing
First wave
After designing our user journey, we explained it to several respondents of our questionnaires. The most impactful feedback was that the most innovative and interesting feature for them is the group concept, where members collectively reduce their carbon impact.
Thus, we put the group functionality at the center of our user journey. The user journey now aims to guide the user to join a group.
We also developed the functionalities of the group. We have added collective group challenges, and a new currency to earn in groups: drops 💧.
Second wave
After having developed the group concept in order to be at the center of our user experience, and to promote collective motivation, we refined this functionality through a visualization workshop.
We put the participants in context, we showed them on the homepage and presented the concept. We then described to them the features found on the group page, without mentionning how the features were organized visually. The participants then described how they saw this group page, as well as the information most relevant to them. The participants then saw our models for the groups, and described their feelings about their vision of the page.
After this workshop, we put the group activity feed on the 2nd page, and the group report on the first page. We also added a system to see the quests and streaks done by party members, as well as the number of drops and carbon impact reduction per person.
UI Design
Design system
The design system used is the governments design system. The original (unmodified) DSFR files are linked to the project's Figma file.
